Last night a large storm to the north of Guernsey could be seen from Jersey with orange and white fork lightning.

The lightning filled the sky for hours but owing to the distance of the storm, it was difficult to hear any thunder.

The previous night, a storm struck just south of the Island.

Senior met officer Frank Le Blancq said the hot weather in France was the reason for the recent storms.

‘Yesterday the temperature in Bordeaux reached 38?C and 35?C in Rennes, so it has been very hot in France.

With southerly winds in the high atmosphere, it is combining to create these storms, which are being blown in our direction.

‘The reason there wasn’t any thunder last night was because once a storm is about 15 miles away, you can’t really hear it.

We expect that there could be more storms this evening and then it should clear for a while.’
