Nigel Crocker’s side defended 192 on the Grainville wicket to remain top of the NatWest Weekend League’s Premier Division 24 points ahead of Old Victorians whom they face this coming weekend.

Mark Saralis and Ian Crocker put on 55 runs for the first Romerils wicket and both then fell on the same score.

Steve Carlyon picked up his second wicket of the match when Jack Walters took the first of four team catches to dismiss Ryan Duplessis.

That brought Minor Counties player Ryan Driver to the wicket and he played solidly before eventually hitting out to Matt Hague in the covers for a fine 62 – eight boundaries and one six.

Jon Prince kept the score ticking over nicely with Romerils closing on 192 for six after Prince struck two boundaries in an unbeaten 36.

Hague and Mark Reynolds both bowled economically in nine-over spells with Walters, who took a wicket with his first ball, finishing a five-over spell with three wickets for 37 runs.

SCF suffered an early set-back with the departure of Hague but the early damage was repaired with a 62-run partnership between Steve Carlyon and Trevor Rousseau.

Carlyon was eventually caught and bowled by Driver, for 51 (eight 4s), and although the champions picked up the run-rate towards the end, Jason Carpenter’s 39 was in vain as Romerils got home by 12 runs.

Saralis conceded just 18 runs in his nine overs while Driver and Peter Blackburn finished with three wickets each.

OVs maintained their title challenge with a three-wicket win against Caesareans at Les Quennevais.

Peter Gough took five of the seven catches taken for the victors while OV skipper Chris Jones was the most destructive with the ball with three wickets in a six-over spell.

OVs reached their winning target of 133 for 7 in 34 overs, the same amount batted by Caesareans.

Bobby Minty continued his good form with the bat top-scoring with 51 for the winners.

St Ouen beat Springfield in the bottom-of-the-table clash by five wickets at FB1.

Peter Canham and Phil Evans’ fifth-wicket partnership of 55 gave the Springfield score some respectability before some hard hitting by Richard Parker (42) took them to 136 all out – Richard Anthony the top wicket-taker with four victims.

Barry Middleton also contributed with another tidy spell, three for 19 in nine overs.

Hellius Pretorius gave Springfield early hope with the ball but St Ouen overcame their loss of two early wickets to win with eight overs and five wickets to spare.

The Saints’ innings included a 57-run partnership between Richard Gomersall and Gary Kynman and an undefeated 49-run partnership between Mark Tribe and Dendy Thompson.
