Rogers finished second in his age group as he clocked a combined swim, bike and run time of 2 hours 1 min 15 sec – 1 minute 15 seconds under Jersey’s required qualifying time – when he and five other Island athletes competed in the Shropshire Triathlon.

The 40-year-old also qualified for the Triathlon World Championships in Hawaii in October alongside Scott Pitcher and Mike Lucas.

Pitcher, in the 25 – 29 age group, came tantalizingly close to the Commonwealth standard, missing out by 51 seconds despite clocking a personal best.

Rogers’ time was also a personal best and faster than James Amy recorded in the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002.

It was a performance that earned him a pat on the back from team manager Gary Jones.

Said Jones: ‘Tim is working incredibly hard – he’s made a huge improvement in his swimming this year.’ Helen MacKenzie and Jenny O Brien – competing in their first UK race – were also aiming for age-group selection for Hawaii and both clocked pbs although just missed out on the worlds.

Competing in their respective age-groups, Mackenzie and O’Brien were to first off in the 1500m swim and put in excellent performances around the long single loop lake course to exit in 29 and 30 minutes respectively.

Competing in the 50-55 group Lucas swam well for a time of 24:55 with Rogers 30 seconds behind the current world age-group silver medalist Peter Younghusband in 23.34.

In the 25-29 group Westcott and Pitcher put in the fastest swim times entering transition just five seconds apart.

The 40k cycle course has a reputation for being fast, but the undulating and rolling course includes a mix of rough and smooth surfaces and a few hills making it a challenge for all the riders.

O’Brien and Mackenzie were first out and had to work hard in windy conditions on the open course.

O’Brien soon overtook Mackenzie and went on to establish a strong lead, completing the course in a creditable 1 hour 12 min.

Rogers maintained a good average speed clocking a 1 hr 21 sec split while Lucas also had a strong bike coming third in his age group in 1:05:24.

In the 25-29 race Pitcher pulled away from Wescot using the tri-bars to maintain a smooth and efficient profile as he sliced through the field to finish in 1:02:36, nearly four minutes ahead of Westcott.

Coming into the final transition for the run Rogers arrived having closed the gap with age-group leader Younghusband.

The 10k run on country lanes took the athletes uphill before decending to the finish.

Mackenzie and O’Brien maintained their respective positions from the bike, each completing the course in new personal best times of 2:40:21 and 2:29:58, a great result for their first race of the season.

Lucas put in an excellent performance looking fresh from the bike and passing many people along the course, coming fourth in his age-group.

Wescott retired after the bike leaving Pitcher to represent Jersey in their age group.

After a superb performance in the swim, on the bike and a great run he set a new personal best time of 2:03:18 narrowly missing the Commonwealth time, though having the consolation of qualifying for the Worlds.

Unfortunately illness meant that Paul Clements had to withdraw from the race.

He and Rogers will be seeking their second Commonwealth time in Bournemouth in July.

Meanwhile ,James Amy will be racing in Windsor next week, with Wescott and Pitcher travelling to Milton Keynes.

It is expected that all the athletes will be racing the National Championships in Ashford in July.
