The Insurance Corporation’s Conservation Award was presented to the school at the Royal Jersey Horticultural and Agricultural Society headquarters yesterday after a month of judging and in the face of tough competition from the other four shortlisted entries.

The children of Les Landes designed a nature and conservation area behind the school which will now be left to let indigenous plants grow freely.

It is hoped that this will result in the free growth of a habitat for plants and animals which the children can observe in future years.

The judges were particularly impressed by the involvement of the pupils in the plan and by the potential of the project.

Connie Wakeham, marketing co-ordinator at ICC and one of the judges, said: ‘The standard of entries was very high, but the Les Landes entry showed an excellent understanding of the brief, with a staged approach on how the project would develop over the three-year period.’
