St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft is determined to build on the growing profile of the Jersey Festival of Motoring which attracted big crowds over the weekend.

He says that the Island should reintroduce the International Road Race in 2007 – 60 years after the first one was staged along Victoria Avenue.

The race became one of Europe’s best known motorsport events but was cancelled in 1952 when the funding dried up.

Local support had waned in 1949 following a triple fatality in a practice session.

Mr Crowcroft says that the fact that half of the cars in the weekend’s 150-strong field came from the UK shows the interest which vintage car racing generates.

It could be even bigger, he thinks, if the Island hosted a grand prix.

‘I’m interested in putting the different elements – the sprints and hill climbs – together on one circuit,’ he said.

‘It’s certainly something which I shall be raising with the St Helier Roads Committee and the Tourism Board.’
