Although a little short of the 2004 total of 63 medals, further analysis shows that, of 41 junior athletes, 27 are in the lower band of their two-year age group.

Star of the show was Jersey’s junior international Lauren Thérin who left her mark on the county record books with three under-20 championship best performances in the throws.

Most notably she twice achieved the Commonwealth Games standard in the discus, her longest throw being a massive PB of 47.25m.

Thérin has since, of course, been called on by the Great Britain U20 team.

All the Jersey throwers were in sparkling form with Jamie Stevenson – who will be in action in the Jeux des Iles in Crete next week, David Felton, newcomer Stephen de la Haye and London-based Paul Derrien all impressing.

Kathryn Rothwell was a class apart in winning her under-13 discus and shot.

Some of the medals were harder-earned than others.

Sam Dawkins did particularly well to pick up three medals in the under-13 sprints with sister Gemma battling to third place in both under-15 100m and 200m, by fractions of a second in each case.

She had the consolation of an unexpected win in the high jump.

The party of endurance runners found the competition tough with the outstanding performances coming in the under-13 800m where Felicity Johnson-Deeley and Robyn Edwards snatched the minor medals.

The same two athletes also finished second and fourth in the 1500m.

In the same age group Lucy Crossman came home with three silver medals to her credit.

With good experience being gained by young and new athletes this was a most satisfactory overall performance and the athletes can look forward to the summer season with confidence.
