CI Traders, who operate Checkers supermarkets, say that the two stores will continue to operate under their present trading names and that they will complement their existing retail operations in the Channel Islands.

Before they were acquired by Safeway some 12 years ago, the stores were owned by M D Besant.

After a major takeover, they then became part of the nationwide Morrison supermarket chain.

CI Traders say that the Safeway stores ‘will now revert to local ownership’.

They also say that they will assume responsibility for all 400 of the stores’ employees in the Channel Islands and that their terms and conditions will remain the same.

Safeway staff in the Islands will provide managerial services in the short term.
