The company, called Manche Iles Express, will take over from a subsidiary of bus operator Connex, which began the service last year.

However, its contract was terminated in October by the French local authority that initiated and funded the route after a series of technical and administrative problems.

The new operator is owned by Société Morbihannaise de Navigation, a Lorient-based line that beat Emeraude and the Connex-owned incumbent to the contract with the Norman Conseil Général de la Manche.

Manche Iles Express will use the same ferries as before – the Victor Hugo and the Marin Marie – and all 36 staff from the old company will be kept on.

The ships will sail from Granville to Jersey and Sark, and from Carteret and Diélette (depending on the tide) to Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney.
