Chamber president Bob Hassell says that politicians and unions have let down most of the Island’s workforce, denying them basic rights such as minimum holidays, minimum pay, and protection against unfair dismissal.

It had been intended to bring the new law into force from today.

But on 22 March, following a 1,000-strong trade union demonstration in the Royal Square, States Members decided to refer back the separate but related Employment Relations Law, which sets out union regulation and also includes some law drafting amendments to the main Employment Law.

As a result, the president of Employment, Senator Paul Routier, said that he had no option but to withdraw for the time being all of the new legislation which provides for basic employment rights, together with the requirement for a £5.

8 minimum wage.

Senator Routier said yesterday that he now intends to bring revised legislation back to the States on 10 May for implementation (if Members agree) on 1 July.
