It was the 25th anniversary of the annual competition that includes shooters from both Jersey and Guernsey as well as Southampton.
Douglas’s victory ensured the Island retained the trophy for the third year in a row – and at the age of just 18, ‘I hope to keep it for a few more years yet,’ said the jubilant teenager.
‘I’m over the moon,’ he added.
‘It’s always nice to keep the trophy out of Guernsey because it upsets them so much – and we’ve done that for the last three years now.’ Douglas scored 564 out of a possible 600 in his first shoot on Friday night and a whopping 568 in his second on Saturday to clinch the Open in style.
Southampton’s Duncan Hart was second with 544 and 530 on Friday and Saturday respectively.
Jerseyman David Turner, who is currently in Melbourne participating in the Commonwealth Shooting Federation, an extension of the Commonwealth Games, won the event last year, with Douglas winning the event in 2003.
The pair travel to Shetland this summer for the 2005 Island Games.
They are hoping to go one better than the silver medal they brought back from Guernsey two years ago – and the way Douglas was shooting last weekend, they have as good a chance as anyone.
