To emphasise the poignancy of the theme of reconciliation, they will be joined by ex-internees and Islanders who fled the advancing German forces in 1940.

The ten-minute drama, Opportunity – written by Jersey Arts Centre director Daniel Austin -will use Philip Jackson’s sculpture in Liberation Square as an unusual backdrop.

He said: ‘The play is a tremendous symbol of the Island’s wish to further extend the hand of friendship, reconciliation and indeed partnership.’ Opportunity will feature six members of the Jersey Arts Centre Youtheatre and six students from the southern German town Bad Wurzach, St Helier’s twin town where 618 British-born Islanders were interned during the Occupation.

The young cast will be joined by three ex-internees and three evacuees.
