The event was officially started by the Lieut-Governor, Air Chief Marshal Sir John Cheshire, at 10 o’clock when members of the Disabled In Pool Swimmers’ team were sent on their way, together with the Highlands Hippos and the Cheshire Cats teams.
Last year the money raised from the event fell short by just £250 of the magic £100,000 target, but the number of swimmers taking part this year has risen by 300 and the organisers, the Jersey Lions Club, are confident that they can break the six-figure target this year.
In previous years, one principal benefactor has received a large chunk of the overall total.
This year, however, the event will be helping people with specific needs.
Organising committee chairman Alistair Sarre said: ‘There is desire and need around every corner in Jersey, and sometimes this need is not always known about.
We are aiming to help individuals with specific needs, such as single parents, people with disabilities and victims of domestic violence.’
