It is a quirk of Jersey’s Sunday trading laws that shops are not allowed to sell real cut flowers on the Christian sabbath unless they are grown on site – although the sale of plastic ones is permissible.

The moves to enforce the law this weekend mean that those leaving their Mother’s Day gift to the last minute will have to buy bunches from farm shops or roadside boxes.

It is a situation that leaves Tracy McCaughan, the managing director of Roberts Garages, unsure whether to laugh or cry.

She said: ‘People are going to go nuts on Mother’s Day if they can’t buy flowers.

It’s a bit of a joke, really.

The police were very apologetic but explained that, unfortunately, it was their job to enforce the law.’
