Grands Vaux reservoir, which is used as a source of drinking water, was drained after recent tests revealed it contained nearly 15 times more cyanazine than is allowed by EU safety standards.

News of the pollution was revealed last month, but attempts to dilute the concentration of the chemical – a herbicide commonly used in daffodil production – have failed and 50 million gallons of water have now been pumped out to sea.

Questions were raised in the States yesterday over concerns that the contaminated water got into people’s homes over a period of three weeks.
