It is hoped the new status will encourage more people to buy Fairtrade products and help reinforce the promotion of the Island to tourists as a green and sustainable destination.

Jersey qualified because of the many schools, community groups, shops and businesses that have switched to Fairtrade products, which ensure producers are treated fairly and paid a fair price.

A certificate marking the occasion was last night presented to Senator Jean Le Maistre, who has championed the cause in the States, by Simeon Greene, who represents banana growers in the Windward Islands, in the Caribbean.
