Former Bailiff and Arts Trust chairman Sir Peter Crill has signed the letter together with former Education presidents Reg Jeune and Iris Le Feuvre and other prominent Islanders, including Pierre Horsfall, the former president of Policy and Resources and current chairman of Jersey Finance Ltd.

It stresses the importance of the Opera House in the affections of Islanders and its unique position in the culture of Jersey.

The letter also suggests that donors to the original £1.6 million appeal to restore the theatre may want their money back if the Opera House becomes a hire-only venue.

‘The very substantial cost of restoring the building may have been wasted if the theatre is not adequately funded now and in the future,’ the letter says.

‘The many donors to the restoration appeal will surely feel aggrieved should the Opera House become merely a hall for hire.

It is even possible that some may seek the return of their donations, given for a purpose no longer being fulfilled.
