Peter Tabb, spokesman for the group, has revealed that 6,351 new cars were registered last year, compared to 7,381 in 2003 and more than 9,000 in 2002.
‘The States clearly do not understand the law of diminishing returns,’ he said.
‘What other organisation other than the government could make its product more attractive by putting the price up? ‘If, as the apologists for VRD claim, it is the economy rather than VRD that is to blame for the decline in registrations in Jersey, then Guernsey knows something about economics that we don’t.’ He says that the JMTF would prefer to see a road tax instead of VRD.
‘The JMTF’s view is that a return to some form of annual road tax, as suggested in the Economic Adviser’s report, would seem to be a fairer means of taxing the motorist since all who use their cars on the road would pay.’
