The St Clement Deputy thinks that the workload is too big for one committee, and he wants the States to agree that it should be split now before the beginning of ministerial government.

In December, when the new form of government begins, the department will form two separate ministries.

Deputy Baudains says that the current committee is short-handed, with six members rather than seven, and that the president, Senator Philip Ozouf, has to withdraw from agricultural debates over a conflict of interest.

He also has to split himself between that job and being vice-president of Finance and Economics.

‘Some Members may think that with only nine months before elections, we should not bother and should let the committee continue as it is.

But we cannot afford to.

Bad planning decisions cannot be undone without very expensive compensation to developers,’ said the Deputy.

But Senator Ozouf rejected the criticisms levelled at him and the committee.

He said that the proposition, if approved by the States, would end his presidency.
