Matthews had named 20 players and was due to release the names of the final 16 last night.

But he has been compelled to wait 24 hours after striker Paul Banahan was ruled out by an ankle injury suffered while playing for Trinity against First Tower on Saturday and fellow striker Jimmy Reilly and midfielders Ged McConnell and Luc Le Mière picked up minor knocks and strains.

Defender Scott Jones has been forced to pull out because of work commitments.

Reilly, McConnell and Le Mière didn’t train with the rest of the squad last night and were having treatment today.

Matthews has asked Jersey Scottish man Paul Aitken and First Tower’s Chris Carter to stand by.

But he has already decided on his two goalkeepers – James Styles and Casey Hickling will travel with Gareth Bailey the unlucky odd man out.

Said Matthews: ‘The injuries are unfortunate but, apart from Banahan, they’re pretty minor and I’m hoping they’ll all come through.

I can only travel with 16 so I’ll be sorting everything out this evening.’ It will be Jersey’s third South West Counties match with two more to play.

They lost to Cornwall in the first game and then beat Devon.
