In a competition reserved for the top 20 selected England players, and at 16 years of age one of the youngest there, Mariana nevertheless justified her place among her peers.

Her entry was too late for her to compete in the singles, but she teamed up with England U18 Jenny Wallwork in the doubles and they cruised through to the finals, beating the No 2 seeds in the semi-finals to set up a meeting with England U19 pair Ruth Coleman and Helen Ward whom they beat convincingly 15-6, 15-9.

The Jersey girl’s mixed doubles partner was U19 player Ed Foster and they too had a straight run to the final, although a bye in the semi-final, due to injury, was a bonus.

They were up against European champions Jenny Wallwork – who has just turned professional and trains full-time at the Milton Keynes Centre of Excellence – and Robert Adcock.

Agathangelou and Foster had to raise their game to compete in the fast, tense match, and they produced excellent badminton.

However, they eventually succumbed 15-13, 15-11 and had to be content with silver.
