Leading by four and a half points to a half after Wednesday afternoon’s four-balls, Jersey turned the screw even further to win maximum singles points for an emphatic 14 and a half points to a half victory overall at L’Ancresse in Guernsey.

It was the biggest winning margin in the series since in began several years ago.

Jersey seniors champion Terry Smith, who won his match 6 and 4 against former Guernsey player Steve Birkett, said: ‘It was a thrilling result and everyone played well.

It’s a big victory but it was certainly not as easy as the final scoreline may suggest.

‘We put ourselves into a good position by not losing any of the four-ball matches on Wednesday.

To then win all ten singles matches away is a tremendous result and I think what breaks may have been around benefited us.

‘Personally I played well and Vic Bourgoise had an excellent victory against Guernsey’s champion Micky King.’ Victorious team manager Wally Clarke said: ‘It was a superb victory and made possible by the four-balls results on Wednesday.

Three of the five matches went to the last couple of holes and we got two and a half points from them.

‘They were excellent results.

It was foul conditions – the players were playing into an easterly gale.

Four points up was a real bonus at the stage and I did feel sorry for the opposition because they could quite easily have won those three matches.

‘It set the tone for yesterday’s singles but I could not have anticipated us winning all ten matches away.

Ten wins were beyond everyone’s wildest expectations.

‘Four of the matches were also close with just one being decided on the 18th.’ Singles results (Jersey golfers named first): Terry Smith bt Steve Birkett 6 and 4.
