The cycle shop proprietor, a Vélo Sport Jersey member, was delighted with his performance on a 50-mile undulating circuit which attracted a field of 35 veteran riders including ex-United States professional Augusto de Castro.
Cabot, 45, said: ‘It was a good ride and I was very pleased.
It was my best performance of the season.
I race off-Island for pleasure and to get some competition.
I’ve no target really – just racing for the enjoyment.’ Cabot is looking to maintain is form back in Jersey over the next few weeks before tackling a race in Reading next month.
The decisive action in the New Forest came on lap two when seven riders, including Cabot, managed to break away from the main field.
Over the next two laps the group worked together and established an unassailable lead.
De Castro then began to show his undoubted class by attacking and breaking away.
Cabot continued to chase with the group.
However, they were unable to catch the rider who soloed to victory.
The VSJ rider tried to break away to claim second place on the last lap but he was caught one mile from the finish.
He hung on and contested the sprint, losing on the line by a tyre-width.
