Stuart Black not only won the silver, in the 16-18 years 1500m freestyle event, but knocked 41 seconds off his personal best while younger brother Ian finished fifth and improved his PB by 18 seconds in the 14-16 years event.
Rosie Barrett also struck silver, in the women’s 1500m event, taking the race from the gun and storming home in 17.30.07, having turned at the 800m mark just four tenths of a second off her Abacus Island record of 9.14.
Ashley Cope (15) found the explosive power of up-and-coming Aussie star Rachel Mitchel too much – she went on to set a new competition record in the 15 and under category – while this was Cope’s first time competing in the 1500m, preferring the shorter 800m.
‘Both Rosie and Stewy swam great races tonight,’ coach Matt Magee said.
‘They’ve been training well all week and were really focused when I spoke to them earlier this evening.
Their coach Paul du Feu should be happy with their performances, let’s hope we can continue this good form over the next couple of days.’ The quartet of Barrett, Lauren Le Mière, Amy Pallot and Victoria Rebours won the bronze in the 4 x 50m medley relay while all four male Tigers swimmers featured in the men’s 400m medley relay with backstroker Daniel Halksworth leading out with a huge drop on his personal best time to a 59.82.
