Chief Olusegun Obasanjo will meet the Lieut-Governor, Air Chief Marshal Sir John Cheshire, and the Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache.
During his two and a half hour visit he will also meet the president of the Policy and Resources Committee, Senator Frank Walker, and P & R chief officer Bill Ogley.
But the main purpose of his visit is likely to be a legal one, in connection with monies that were secreted away over several years in Jersey banks and trust companies by the former Nigerian president, Sani Abacha.
Last year the Island recovered over $150 million of the loot as a result of the efforts of a legal team led by the Island’s Attorney-General, William Bailhache.
A key figure in the Abacha case is Abubakar Atiku Bagadu, who was extradited from Texas back to Nigeria at the request of the Jersey and UK authorities.
Bagadu is currently facing criminal proceedings, but it is likely that the current Nigerian president will want to hear the evidence first-hand when he visits the Law Officers’ Department on Wednesday.
President Obasanjo has already expressed his ‘heartfelt gratitude’ to the Island for tracking down and returning the money to his government.
Although the Abacha regime syphoned funds into many different countries, Jersey has stood almost alone in pursuing the miscreants and tracking down the funds.
