A FORMER Assistant Chief Minister has confirmed he will be standing in St Clement.
Deputy Alex Curtis was a political newcomer when he topped the poll in the parish four years ago.
He was appointed an Assistant Chief Minister under Deputy Kristina Moore’s government and has since been a member of both the Environment, Housing and Infrastructure Scrutiny Panel and the Corporate Services Scrutiny Panel, as well as acting as vice-chair of the Planning Committee.
He said: “Over the past four years, it has been a privilege to represent the people of St Clement and the Island as a whole.
“During my time in the States, I have worked to deliver on the aims I stated when I was elected. Whether in the ministerial government, scrutiny sides of the Assembly, or my continuous involvement in the Planning Committee I have worked to contribute to good, evidence-based decision making while also being able to help parishioners who have come to me with specific concerns or needs.”
There will be three St Clement Deputy seats on offer in June – with Deputies Barbara Ward and Karen Wilson both also seeking re-election, while Deputy Sir Philip Bailhache has announced his retirement.
A former data scientist, Deputy Curtis added: “I still believe we need an Island that lives within its means and applies solutions that match our budget and the size of our population.
“We must deliver public services more efficiently to balance our spending, and we must aim for solutions based on research to best serve the islanders whilst giving public sector employees a positive and engaging environment to work in.
“We need politicians with the conviction to make changes. That means innovating where we can and never losing sight of what makes Jersey work: community, personal responsibility and simplicity – both in public services and in the economy. These are important principles that guide my decision making.
“Having worked at Microsoft using data to solve real problems across 13 countries in Europe, the UK and Africa, I know the difference between evidence and assumption, and I’ll keep applying that standard in the Assembly to push for an island that we can be proud of and that stands strong into the future.”
During this term of office, Deputy Curtis created a website – digitalstates.je – to track Members’ contributions in the Assembly alongside their voting records.
“Looking ahead, I remain committed to representing the people of St Clement and Jersey in an island that should be grounded in common-sense, a people-first approach and honesty,” he said.
Islanders will head to the polls on Sunday 7 June.
