AN accountant and former senior civil servant is set to stand for St Saviour Deputy.
Chris Leck, a former projects director for the Treasury Department, will seek on of the four Deputy seats on offer.
As well as working for the government, Mr Leck has also been an audit partner with Deloitte and a treasurer trustee for the Jersey Employment Trust.
He said: “I have lived in Jersey since 2003 and live in St Saviour. Over that time, for many, Jersey has become worryingly expensive and less attractive than it used to be. I want to help change that.
“Jersey needs strong efficient competent government. Expenditure should be prudent and represent value for money. The books must be balanced. The financial environment should encourage new and existing businesses to prosper.”
He said that the, among his critical policy objectives, the government should review taxes, social security and fuel duties to support Islanders, while growing the economy by “cutting red tape, removing unnecessary regulations and attracting high-tech, AI and other businesses to the Island”.
He added that first-time buyer assistance, including mortgage relief, should be expanded and derelict greenhouse sites should be developed for affordable housing. Mr Leck also said health and immigration were other key policy areas arguing in favour of improving patient pathways, preventative services, accountability and access to specialist care, as well as widening immigration policies to ensure those with non-specialist skills can live in Jersey
At a parish level, Mr Leck said that he want to address St Saviour’s roads, safety and speeding issues and investigate the creation of other community areas in addition to the proposed Parish Hall Community Park.
He added: “I am a team player. I look forward to working collaboratively in the Assembly and the parish to make Jersey an island where everyone can feel financially secure and part of a vibrant community”.
Deputies Malcolm Ferey and Raluca Kovacs have both confirmed they will be seeking re-election in St Saviour, while Deputies Louise Doublet, Tom Binet and Philip Ozouf are yet to formally declare their intentions.
Islanders will head to the polls on Sunday 7 June.
