SCF won by seven wickets against St Ouen at Grainville while the OVs hung on to beat Romerils by one wicket on pitch one at Les Quennevais.Caesareans also opened their account with a first victory of 2004, defeating Old Codgers by 35 runs at FB1.In Division II yesterday there were wins for newcomers St Brelade, by two wickets against eight-man St Ouen Reserves at FB1 while Springfield won a low-scoring game against SCF Reserves at LQ1 by five wickets.Sporting Club lead OVs by four points at the top of Division I, after two games played, while the same two clubs’ Reserves-teams are top in Division II with OVs leading the way with a game in hand.Steve Carlyon followed up last weekend’s century with an undefeated 55 in SCF’s Division I victory against St Ouen.It was a low-scoring game at Grainville with St Ouen closing their 45 overs on 103 for nine wickets.
The champions reached their winning target in 28.2 overs with Carlyon hitting four boundaries.SCF captain Matt Hague said: ‘Steve’s batting well, it looks a comfortable win but it was not.
The wicket was difficult to score runs off, it was slow.
We bowled really well and for the second week running all of our bowlers have taken wickets.’St Ouen were tied down early on by some very accurate deliveries from Nick Jewell and Mark Reynolds.’Jewell, who took three wickets, conceded just a dozen runs in his ten-over spell while Reynolds finished with one wicket for 18 runs.
Jewell delivered five maidens and Reynolds four.OVs reached their target with the last pair at the wicket against Romerils.
Jamie Mackintosh, who earlier took four wickets for eight runs in four overs, and James Cartmell saw them home with two balls to spare after getting 13 runs off the final three overs.OVs skipper Chris Jones said: ‘The low scores were nothing to do with the pitch and fortunately we scrapped home.
Romerils got away from us at one stage but they then let us back in.’It was a tremendous effort from our last two batsmen, especially as they were up against Romerils’ opening bowlers Mark Saralis and Nigel Crocker.’Ward Jenner top-scored for OVs with 47 including four boundaries.
Jenner received excellent support from Paul Marshallsay whose 39 included three 4s.Romerils captain Nigel Crocker said: ‘It was a great game and it could have gone either way.
It was a similar story for both teams as we were 124 for 5 before then being all out for 146.
OVs slipped from 123 for 5 to 130 for 9 after Mark Saralis took three wickets in one over but unfortunately we couldn’t get the final wicket for the victory.’Eighteen-year-old Marc Whitsey top-scored in Caesareans’ 35-run win against Old Codgers.
Whitsey hit nine 4s in an undefeated 69, his half-century coming up in 50 minutes off 50 balls.A total of 228 for victory proved too much for Old Codgers but they gave a fine account of themselves with opener Dave Buxton carrying his bat for 88 runs.
Buxton played the anchor role with his 50 coming up in 142 minutes off 105 balls.
Buxton hit one 6 and two 4s.St Brelade are celebrating their first-ever Division II win, by two wickets against eight-man St Ouen.St Brelade skipper Heath Kearns said: ‘It’s our first victory and I’m delighted.
It was a fantastic game of cricket and St Ouen were well in the running all the way through.’What was pleasing was we were able to field a full team including two 14-year-olds.
Luke Fisher and Myles Landick both played well with Myles bludgeoning his way to top score with 32 runs in his first ever senior match.’Springfield required just 13.4 overs to beat SCF Reserves, with the latter all out for 58 in 21.5 overs with Tim Kearsey taking four of their wickets for 13 runs in five overs.
