The inaugural match is scheduled to be played on Sunday 6 June, the same day as the U13 and U14 inter-insular matches are due to be contested.Jersey Cricket Development Officer Chris Minty said: ‘The game has been added to the calendar to increase the range of representative matches.
The playing format and the venue has still to be decided.’The age-group will play with a hard ball and the game will probably take place in Guernsey with possibly 30 overs a side.’Junior cricketers have a good selection of Festivals, tours and home matches to look forward to this summer and with the season nearing, many youngsters have already been honing their skills.A total of 138 enrolled on the spring term course run by Educations, Sport and Culture, taking place at Langford, Grainville and Les Quennevais, while the Development of Excellence scheme has resulted in 90 selected players getting regular coaching from qualified Jersey Cricket Coaches Association coaches at Grainville and Langford every weekend.Jersey Primary Schools will again be playing Kwik Cricket in various competitions this summer, two of which will provide the opportunity to travel to the United Kingdom for Festivals.A comprehensive programme of fixtures for Secondary Schools children in Years 7 to ten will also be organised in four divisions.The Channel Islands Cricket Board’s ‘Cricket in Schools’ programme has commenced with De La Salle College, St Michael’s, Victoria College Preparatory and JCG Prep all taking part.
Other schools have requested assistance for the summer term and the CICB will endeavour to assist.Romerils Cricket Club, under the guidance of Island player Mark Saralis and former Island captain Dave Gorman, have started a coaching programme at Le Rocquier School.
The programme, supported by the School and the CICB, will provide cricket for girls and boys, and both parties can only benefit in the long term.
