This is the Vauxhall Insignia GSi, a more performance-orientated version of the company’s fleet-focused saloon car.

This model replaces the VXR at the top of the recently updated Insignia range and packs 252bhp – though it’s likely a hotter model is in the pipeline.

Under the bonnet sits a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which puts power to the all-wheel-drive system through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

It might not have as much power as the car it has replaced, but Vauxhall says the GSi is actually faster around the Nurburgring thanks to being lighter, with a lower centre of gravity and more traction.

The manufacturer says it has developed an all-new chassis for the GSi, supported by shorter springs and new, sportier shock absorbers that are said to reduce body movement “significantly”. Increased stopping power comes in the form of four-pot Brembo brakes up front.

Buyers can choose between the standard 18-inch alloy wheels and a 20-inch option, which is available as an optional extra. Both come shod in sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres.

There are sporty design tweaks to the outside, including a subtle rear spoiler and two chrome-edged exhaust pipes. Inside, there are new sports seats that can be specified with a choice of two leather combinations and come with ventilation, heating, massage and adjustable side bolsters.

The Vauxhall Insignia GSi will make its public debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show in September when prices are likely to be confirmed.
