ST HELIER’S all-weather lifeboat was launched yesterday afternoon to assist a sailing vessel which was struggling to make progress in strong winds and big tides.
The RNLI crew was paged at 4.25pm after Jersey Coastguard spotted the vessel south of the Demi des Pas lighthouse and became concerned that it appeared to be experiencing difficulties.
The sailing vessel was making “very little progress” in the challenging conditions, according to RNLI Jersey.
The St Helier lifeboat launched and headed towards the vessel to assess the situation before standing by and providing assistance as required.
It then accompanied the boat towards St Helier.
Once safely inside the harbour, the lifeboat crew helped those on board get alongside and secure the vessel.
RNLI Jersey said the incident was “a good example of Jersey Coastguard watching over our waters, and how in strong winds and tides it can make a challenging situation for vessels at sea”.
The incident came during a weekend of unsettled conditions around Jersey’s coast, with strong winds also causing disruption to ferry services.
