GUERNSEY is to get its first female Bailiff for the first time in the 748-year history of the role.
Deputy Bailiff Jessica Roland (pictured) will succeed Sir Richard McMahon, when he retires at end of August 2026, it was confirmed yesterday.
Ms Roland will be the first woman to hold the role since it was created in 1278.
Jersey has never had a female Bailiff.
However, on Monday, the Island welcomed its second female Solicitor General, Victoria Bell, who is now in the traditional line of succession for the role.
Stéphanie Nicolle was the last woman to be appointed HM Solicitor General in 1994, but stepped down from the role – and public service – in 2008, going on to become Adjunct Professor of Immovable Property at Jersey’s Institute of Law, before retiring in 2012.
