Homemade alcohol confiscated at La Moye prison

The most commonly confiscated contraband at the prison between 2012 and the start of this month, according to the information, has been non-prescribed medicines or medication that has been prescribed, not finished and not returned. There have been 45 confiscations over the 5½-year period.

Homemade alcohol, known as hooch, has been confiscated on nine occasions while illegal drugs have also been recovered on eight occasions. The information was released following a freedom of information request – not made by the JEP. The request asked for the quantities of alcohol, homemade alcohol, cigarettes, medication and illegal drugs confiscated at secure facilities in Jersey. All the confiscations occurred at HMP La Moye.

Bill Millar, HMP La Moye’s governor, said that instances of seized contraband were low and added that the majority of drug finds related to prescribed medication that was found ‘in the possession of the wrong person or in an area where it should not be’.
