Pupil Premium scheme to be expanded

Nineteen primary and secondary schools have already taken part in a pilot project of the Jersey Premium, through which financial support can be allocated to children who live in a household that receives income support or who are under the care of Social Services.

It is not known how many children have taken part in the pilot, but 2,424 will be eligible when the full scheme begins.

Education Minister Rod Bryans yesterday told the Education and Home Affairs Scrutiny Panel that the scheme was already having an impact on the performance of the children who had received the funding.

At least £500,000 has already been spent and a further £1.6 million has been allocated for the next three years.

Primary schools will receive £700 per eligible pupil and secondary schools will receive £450. The funds are paid to the school, who then spend the money on the individual.

The money can be spent in a number of different ways to improve the pupil’s schooling, including on extra reading support, extra equipment or access to school clubs.
