Border security ‘at risk’ if cuts policy continues

Amid a backdrop of increased terror attacks in Europe, people-smugglers using Jersey as a back door to the UK and city gangs plotting to import drugs into the Island, Constable Deidre Mezbourian has said that ‘enough is enough’.

She said Customs, which seizes millions of pounds’ worth of drugs and stops numerous illegal immigrants from entering the Island every year, have borne the brunt of cuts and efficiencies over the past ten years, adding that any more cutbacks could put the level of service they offer at risk.

The politician said she believes Customs, and other frontline services, will get by until the end of the next Medium Term Financial Plan in 2019 but warned that whoever is Home Affairs Minister after the 2018 General Election must fight to protect their finances.
