Freight and broadband on the CICRA agenda

The Channel Islands Competition and Regulatory Authorities announced that several areas of Jersey’s economy will be looked at as they issued details of their work programme for 2017.

During the next six months, the CICRA intends to conduct a review of the freight services market. It says it will ‘consider market developments in the Channel Islands to assess whether competition in this sector of the economy is working effectively’.

Work carried on in the telecommunications sector will include introducing ‘appropriate controls’ on broadband pricing, and a review of mobile termination rate charges is planned. The CICRA also plans to ensure ‘improved transparency’ of the performance targets of Ports of Jersey.

In its statement, the watchdog says: ‘Markets are generally better at meeting consumer demands where competition is effective. A key CICRA priority is, therefore, the protection of the competitive processes in the Channel Islands through effective use of its Competition Law powers. The CICRA also has specific regulatory powers that place a duty on it to promote competition in particular sectors of the economy.’
