Nuclear groups in last-ditch battle

The 33 billion euro European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) project is now in Paris awaiting the three signatures of the Ministers of Economy, Industry and Ecology. Anti-nuclear groups, including Greenpeace, CRILAN and the powerful farmers’ association Confederation Paysanne, are to lodge an appeal in Nantes calling for annulment of a building permit granted to Electricité de France for preliminary groundwork which began last summer. They claim that the permit breaches French legislation designed to protect the country’s coastlines from development. A court in Caen rejected an earlier legal action on the grounds that the new EPR will be situated between two existing structures.
