Football:Double joy for Wanderers in Madeira

Goals from David Kenyon and Scott Slicer capped a brilliant night for the visitors, slightly dampened by some poor discipline.

Wanderers’ picked up four cautions and then having Tim Cupit sent off in the closing minutes for a dangerous two-footed tackle.

The Jersey side got off to a dream start with a goal after just 62 seconds, Kenyon rifling home a rising shot into a top corner from 18 yards after excellent play on their right from Dane Sutton before Ollie Thompson supplied the final pass.

‘It was an outstanding result,’ beamed Wanderers manager Daryn Noble.

The win completed a double over the Portuguese League club following their 2-1 win at Springfield last February.

Playing on the hosts’ main ground, following their first-team’s 2-0 win against Naval, sadly, only a couple of hundred spectators stayed to watch a competitive junior game.

Said Noble: ‘The early goal set us up nicely and what a goal.

To put in a show like that against opponents who train five days a week is a credit to the players.

Full credit to them they worked their socks off and our players didn’t look out of place against a well-drilled side.

‘Unfortunately there was a lot of intimidation and we fell into the trap by reacting to it.

We well have to look at that and learn from the mistakes we made.’ Tackles flew in on a soft surface and Sutton was cautioned in the 13th minute after his third foul.

Goalkeeper Greg Forster kept Wanderers ahead with two smart saves while defenders Sam Habin and James Quérée produced well-timed tackles to prevent the Madeirans getting through Wanderers back line of three, which was superbly marshalled by Piers Cummins.

The youngster showed great maturity in his role and looks an excellent prospect for the future.

Kenyon, who linked well with Thompson in attack, was denied by a full-stretch save for Nacional’s goalkeeper and minutes later Kenyon too was cautioned together with an opponent.

Nacional’s Carlos headed over from five yards just after the break and minutes later Thompson and Danny Flynn, one of seven Wanderers half-time substitutes, were cautioned.

Wanderers then doubled their lead, sub Slicer getting behind the defence and goalkeeper to slam the ball home after goalkeeper Max Jouan pumped a free kick forward from the half-way line.

Jouan tipped the ball over his crossbar in the closing stages while Kevin Johnstone made three vital interceptions to save the day before Cupit`s dismissal followed with time almost up.
