One such gardener, John Batho (60), was about to retire and was looking forward to tending a plot at Les Creux.But when he telephoned the Education, Sport and Culture Department just before he finished his long career in the finance industry, he was bitterly disappointed to hear that the allotment plans had been postponed.Assistant director of Sport and Leisure Derek de la Haye said: ‘The budget won’t allow us to develop the area as planned.
Planning gave us permission for the allotments plus a central building where people could leave their tools – but that will cost around £200,000.’Asked why a central building was required, he explained that it was a stipulation of the planning consent.
‘They didn’t want lots of little sheds all over the place,’ he said.
