Death crash driver avoids jail

Clive Mauger (69) died instantly when his car crashed into a tree after clipping the mattress during the accident on a dual carriageway in Kent last year.

During a hearing in Maidstone Crown Court the driver – prison officer Rebecca Miller – pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving.

On Wednesday, the 39-year-old was sentenced to ten months in prison, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work, according to Kentonline.

A tagged curfew from 7pm to 7am was imposed for four months.

Miller was also banned from driving for two years and will have to take an extended test before her licence is returned. She was ordered to pay £1,200 within three months.

Mr Mauger – a father of four and grandfather – moved to the UK a number of years ago.
