New care model: ‘There will be changes seen next year’

A total of 14 road shows have taken place around the Island to present the model, which is designed to provide more care within the community rather than at the Hospital – freeing up services and bed space for people who need it most. And it is hoped that, following the consultation, parts of the model will be put into practice as early as 2020.

However, it will take three to five years to establish the new system in its entirety, Health say.

Group managing director for Health Rob Sainsbury said: ‘We have held the road shows now, so we will collate what people have said and will work them into the model.

‘In the new year a health economist will come over and stress test the model financially. In terms of how it is paid for, from our internal analysis, I don’t believe a lot of extra money will be needed to implement the model. A lot of our money is in buildings and goes on staff.

‘The [Health] minister has been clear that he wants to take the model to the States Assembly for discussion and for Scrutiny to undertake a review of it, which is very much welcomed.

‘There will be changes seen next year in terms of work around, for example, diabetes and dermatology, but the full model won’t be seen for another three to five years.’ Mr Sainsbury added that one of the core issues raised during the public hearings was that people had been left frustrated by having to get to the Hospital, only to find out the procedure they required was simple and took very little time.

He said there had been gaps in the model which had been highlighted by members of the public and would be properly considered.

He added: ‘We need to speak with and engage the community on other topics, because it has been beneficial and helpful, as they are the people who know and understand the Island more than most.

‘There have been gaps in the model in terms of support for carers.

‘We will collate the views from the road shows and individual feedback and consider them.’
