LibertyBus services gradually returning

The bus company has been hard hit during the pandemic, and received £400,000 from the government in May.

It has particularly suffered from a lack of holidaymakers, who last year generated between £2.5 million and £3 million in revenue for the company.

Kevin Hart, LibertyBus director, said: ‘The bus service here in Jersey has always run to a flexible timetable that shrinks and grows with seasonal demands.

‘We are constantly monitoring service levels and adapting our timetables to meet the demands of our users or to respond to changes in the political and public arena.

‘This is how we will continue to operate for the rest of 2020 and beyond.

‘While we are seeing passenger numbers gradually increase again, we are still around 85% down. Last week for example we did 97,000 fewer passenger journeys than we did on the same week last year.’

Buses are currently at 50% capacity on board, to free up space for people who can only use the bus.

Passengers are being asked to sit away from others, use hand sanitiser and cover their mouths and noses. Only contactless payments and Avanchicards are accepted.

The company will also introduce transfer tickets from 1 July, which means a passenger who changes bus to complete their full journey will now get one ticket instead of two.

Using an Avanchicard will save passengers 30p, with a 50p saving for people using contactless cards.

Mr Hart added: ‘The cheapest way for regular bus users to travel around the Island is still with our unlimited pass which starts from £46 per month.

‘That means that someone using the service five days a week will only pay £2.12 per day for all their journeys.’

‘The new transfer ticket will be of particular benefit to those making occasional journeys, such as travel to the Airport from the east of the Island.’

The new system will be trialled for a six-month period, with data leading to a review of fares and forming part of a development plan.
