JEP Opinion: A move to avoid more tragedy

Stafford Slater, whose brother Sam was killed in a road incident on the Esplanade in 2014, has spoken out in favour of the new traffic lights in the area, which he says he hopes will prevent more tragedies in the future.

It is extremely sad that it has taken a young man’s death for the Infrastructure Department to have to install these new lights, at the right turning into Kensington Place from the Esplanade’s westbound carriageway. However, while it will do little to ease Sam’s family’s grief, it must be some comfort to them to know that similar tragedies will hopefully now be prevented in the future.

As Stafford told the JEP: ‘Hopefully, the new lights will take any element of chance out of the equation and make it safer for people, drivers and motorcyclists.’

Hopefully motorists will think twice the next time they skip a red light, or question the need for the new traffic lights, and remember what a dangerous place the road can be.
