Aggressive Asian crabs ‘here to stay’

Dr Paul Chambers, marine and coastal manager at the Environment Department has been studying the Asian crab since August 2016 when it unexpectedly started breeding in great numbers in St Catherine’s Bay. By October it had spread around the east, south and west coasts to St Ouen’s Bay.

‘I think they are here to stay,’ Dr Chambers said. ‘The population structure is complete as I have seen every stage of crab from the very tiny to adult, which shows that they are fully established. Most of the ones seen last year were quite small which makes me think that the population is building up again and I expect their numbers will be as numerous this year as they were last year.’
