Islanders urged to use water wisely as absolute drought begins

The drought officially began at 10 am on Thursday, as the Island went 15 consecutive days without any measurable rainfall.

Reservoirs are 93 per cent full – slightly below normal for this time of year. But Jersey Water is warning that with summer approaching, and the continuing risk of further dry periods, levels could drop in the coming months.

Helier Smith, Jersey Water’s chief executive, said: ‘We would encourage customers to think about their water usage. A garden hose can use around 1,000 litres of water per hour – enough water to supply a family of four for three days.’
