Planned strikes could cause Christmas travel disruption

Baggage handlers, check-in staff and cargo crew working for Swissport UK, the world’s largest ground and cargo handler, at 18 airports across the UK are set to strike for 48 hours from 23 December over a dispute about pay.

The airports affected by the first strike include Gatwick, Heathrow, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Stansted, East Midlands and Belfast.

Others that will be affected are Aberdeen, Bristol, Bournemouth, Cardiff, Doncaster, Edinburgh, Leeds/Bradford, Luton, Newcastle and Southampton.

Both Unite and Swissport have said they would be open to talks with the conciliation service Acas to try and resolve the dispute.

Swissport are said to be drawing up contingency plans as the situation develops.
