Back me on hospital site, urges minister

With a decision which could decide the fate of a project worth £466 million due to be made in the States this week, Senator Andrew Green said that he had received overwhelming support from the public to rebuild on the current hospital site and has been told repeatedly to ‘just get on with it’.

The minister added that he had consulted Islanders extensively over the past few months, often asking the views of people in the street or at events.

And he warned that calls for an alternative site at the Waterfront to be used were ‘a recipe for extra delays and costs of up to £2 million’.

Earlier this year plans to build the new hospital on the People’s Park collapsed after a public backlash. The proposition to build on the current site is due to be debated in the States this week.

St John Constable Chris Taylor has lodged an amendment calling for an alternative site at the Waterfront to be considered and for the final decision about where the hospital is built to be delayed until next summer.

The States debate is due to begin on Wednesday.
