La Collette may store asbestos permanently

A consultation has been launched on proposals to vary the Infrastructure Department’s waste management licence to allow the long-term disposal of the material at the site.

It is the latest step in the Island’s attempts to deal with its stockpiles of the hazardous material, which for years was left in deteriorating containers at the site.

A number of plans for the waste were considered, including using a process of super-heating to transform the asbestos into an inert glass-like substance.

Anyone interested in commenting on the proposals for permanent storage can view the consultation on gov.je.

The deadline for comments is 25 October.
