Unveiling of Somme memorial to Islanders

The traditional Jersey granite standing stone, which is similar to the parish Millennium stones, will be on display at the Island’s Somme Centenary commemoration due to take place this evening in Howard Davis Park.

The monument is expected to leave the Island tomorrow for France, to be erected by members of the Jersey Field Squadron in the village of Guillemont, where the Pals fought alongside Irish and Guernsey troops in September 1916.

However, a core taken from the centre of the stone is remaining in Jersey to be the focal point of a ceremony planned for November 2018 to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.
