Park protest gathers momentum

In what has become one of the most contentious issues to be brought before the States in years, Members are on Tuesday due to begin debate on St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft’s proposition for the park to be dropped from the shortlist of possible sites for the Island’s new multi-million-pound hospital.

Around 5,000 Islanders have signed a petition calling for the St Helier park to be dropped from the list of four options, which also includes redeveloping the current site, or building on the Waterfront or at Overdale.

And on Monday morning protesters gathered in the park – which the Council of Ministers has described as the ‘best clinical option’ for a new hospital – to continue their campaign and to raise awareness of Tuesday’s rally by lying down in front of a JCB.
