Could a Jerseyman be the next World’s Strongest Man?

The 24-year-old is due to compete in the national qualifiers for the World’s Strongest Man competition this weekend.

The athlete, who was crowned England’s Strongest Novice in the under 80kg category earlier this year, will travel to Newcastle for the qualifiers on Sunday.

If he gets through, Mr Hilton, who is a carpenter, says he believes he will be the first Islander to compete at the competition, which is widely regarded as the pinnacle of strongman events.

Mr Hilton, the son of Deputy Jackie Hilton, said he has been training in the gym since he was 18 but only started focusing on strongman competitions two years ago.

‘I’m not nervous I am really looking forward to it,’ he said.

‘A lot of the events suit me so it should be good.

‘I’m not the first to compete in strongman competitions because I know it was really big in the 80s, but I definitely think I would be the first to compete in World’s Strongest Man.

‘I would have heard of anybody who had.’

The Islander will compete in events such as a 250kg tractor tire flip, lifting 120kg atlas stones over 4ft bars and 200kg deadlifts.

Mr Hilton, who said he wanted to thank LH fitness for their support during his training, added that he sometimes used his strength for reasons other than competing.

‘I can lift cars, which I have done and videoed, bench press my friends and squat them too,’ he said.

‘People tend to think I’m showing off when I start lifting cars.’
